Lech & Zürs,
in summer
At 1450 M the stylish resort of Lech Am Arlberg in Austria has no trouble convincing visitors that it is one heck of a famous and sophisticated winter sports destination. But what about the summer months; does the winter haunt of the rich and famous simply fold its wings and bask in the summer sun and fresh air with just the locals as benefactors? Well if this writer is any judge, sitting in the afternoon mountain sun and enjoying coffee on the terrace of one of Lech ’s finest hotels is as great a relaxation experience one is likely to find anywhere. Regardless of how much money you have. Ah how the other half must live.
So I hear you ask, what is there to do in Lech in summer? Can you be specific about what activities there are in this well known Austrian winter sports destination?
Yes actually! For starters there is the 60m swimming pool. Other than the fact that it is heated (at this altitude it should be) and has an individual section for kids, one could be mistaken for thinking this could be a real mountainside lake; that is the character with which this pool was created. As well there is a golf academy and a mini golf course if you are so inclined, but you didn’t chose Lech for the golf, did you? Mind you there are a lot of real-thing alpine lakes on the top of the Arlberg mountains and these are made conveniently accessible by the network of mountain transportation to partake in activities there. Swimming in the lakes is not recommended however, but there is a lot of choice in these regions if you are reasonably fit.
Of course Lech am Arlberg has all of the activities normally associated with summer life in the mountains. Naturally this includes hiking and walking possibilities on all levels, tennis, fishing in rivers and lakes, well, you get the picture. Everything that you can find in most mountain resorts in summer, except for the fact that you are in Lech and Lech as we know is one of Austria ’s premier resort destinations. That holds true for summer as well. There is a card that is free to all hotel guests in Lech and for our money it is one of the best offers in the mountains. This card offers free open lifts, the free use of the village bus service that whisks you to the mountain lakes and scenery, selected guided walks, entry to the swimming pool and tennis court, free admission to the Lech Golf Academy and more entries and activities for the entire family. Not bad when you consider that you pay reduced summer rates at one of Lech’s hotels.
